Living in Morgan Hill
Morgan Hill sits in southern Santa Clara County between the Diablo Range and the Santa Cruz Mountains, with El Toro rising over a walkable downtown of restaurants and tasting rooms. Homeowners enjoy open space, wineries, Anderson Lake and Uvas Canyon nearby, and easy US-101 access to Silicon Valley employers.
For 30 years, through 2019, downtown hosted the Taste of Morgan Hill, the Chamber of Commerce's two-day street festival of food, music, classic cars and arts and crafts. Each October, downtown now hosts the MOHI Food & Wine Festival. Wineries with Morgan Hill addresses include Guglielmo Winery, family owned since 1925 and described by the Morgan Hill Historical Society as the oldest continuously operated family winery in the Santa Clara Valley, along with Cottage Creek Vineyards, Horse Thief Vineyards, J Winston Winery, Lightpost Winery, MOHI Ranch and Rahal Wines.
Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round and rain or shine, the Morgan Hill Certified Farmers' Market sets up in the Caltrain station parking lot at 17295 Butterfield Boulevard. Parking downtown is free, including more than 270 spaces in the 3rd Street Parking Garage between Third and Fourth Streets, with its vehicle entrance on Fourth Street.
History
The city takes its name from Hiram Morgan Hill, whose family estate lay near the peak once called Murphy's Peak, now known as El Toro. The peak appears on the city seal and logo. Madrone, once its own township, joined Morgan Hill in 1959 and is now its northernmost district.
Getting Around
Morgan Hill is about 24 miles south of downtown San Jose and 13 miles north of Gilroy, and had 45,483 residents at the 2020 census. Caltrain's Morgan Hill station offers weekday commute-hour service to San Jose and the Peninsula.
Recreation
Cyclists know Morgan Hill as home to the worldwide headquarters of Specialized Bicycle Components on Concord Circle. On Condit Road, the city's Morgan Hill Aquatics Center has an Olympic-size 50-meter pool, a recreation pool with two large waterslides and a water playground, an instructional pool, a spray ground and an 18-hole mini golf course, and the nearby Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center hosts regional and national tournaments on two lighted synthetic turf stadiums and 10 grass fields.
Henry W. Coe State Park, the largest state park in Northern California, protects 87,000 acres of the Diablo Range about 13 miles east of town at the end of East Dunne Avenue, with trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding as well as fishing.
Local Eats
Local favorites include Ladera Grill, Trail Dust BBQ and Siam Thai Restaurant on Monterey Road downtown, Maurizio's Authentic Italian Cuisine on East First Street, Odeum on Depot Street for Mediterranean, Sinaloa Cafe, Margarita's Bar & Grill at Vineyard Town Center and Super Taqueria on Monterey Road for Mexican food, My Pizza on West Main Avenue, and Betsy's Restaurant at Tennant Station for breakfast.
