After the Week, the Home Base: What SF Tech Week Day 5 Says to Founders Choosing Where to Live

Friday, October 9, is Day 5 of SF Tech Week, and the calendar changes shape. There are fewer panels and more rooftops, more mornings outdoors, and a few rooms built specifically for people who allocate capital. The week, presented by a16z, runs through Sunday, but for many visitors Friday is the last full day in the city.

All week at The DiResta Group, I have been writing about the home as an asset, liquidity before the exit, equity turning into a down payment, and the pull of wealth, wellness, and the waterfront. Day 5 brings it home, literally. After a week like this, where do you want to come back to?

Rooftops with a front-row view

Several Friday events are built around the sky over the Bay. Sentry, Neon by Databricks, and Exa host "The Tech Week Flyover" at Kaiyō Rooftop, 701 3rd Street, Floor 12, from noon to 4:00 PM, with a short conversation featuring David Cramer of Sentry, Hayden Bleasel of OpenAI, Andre Landgraf of Neon and Databricks, and Shyam Kumar of Exa, and what the page calls front-row views of the Blue Angels over the Bay. Mayer Brown hosts a Fleet Week Rooftop Social at 1 Hotel San Francisco from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and its page promises the same front-row view.

In the Marina, Together AI, DTCP, and NVIDIA host "The Science of Speed: Tech Week Meets Fleet Week" at 200 Marina Boulevard from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, described on the page as a private waterfront chalet. And at Marina Green, the Girls in Growth community gathers on the grass from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM with wine and snacks courtesy of Multiply.

Aboard the Klamath at Pier 9, the National Security + Space Innovation Summit hosted by VetsinTech and the Bay Area Council reaches its Innovation Summit day, with a startup demo floor, a planned on-water autonomous systems demonstration, and waterfront viewing for the Blue Angels, per the page.

Rooftops and water views are a theme buyers bring up with us constantly. A terrace, a view corridor, or a short walk to the shoreline can matter as much as square footage. Those details deserve the same attention in Morgan Hill, where the view might be hills and vineyards instead of the Bay.

Rooms for family offices and allocators

Friday has a cluster of capital rooms. "The Golden Hour: LPs, GPs and Family Offices Gathering" convenes from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Salesforce Tower, per the page, with conversation on private markets, liquidity solutions, and venture secondaries. Focus on Risk hosts CAGR CLUB at 1 Sansome Street from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, described on the page as a private rooftop bar evening for family offices, GPs, LPs, and corporate development leaders.

Along the waterfront, MelanInScience, BLCK VC San Francisco, and NSBE Bay Area Professionals host "Human Performance, Capital & Innovation" at The Commonwealth Club, 110 The Embarcadero, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The page frames it around sports tech, health optimization, longevity, and the capital flowing into them.

When a founder's role shifts toward allocating, the questions about home shift too. It may be a primary residence, a second home, or a property held for the long term. Trevor and I help clients think through each one alongside their advisors, so the real estate decision supports the broader plan.

The physical economy, and a morning on the courts

One Friday breakfast speaks directly to our world. "Pickleball & Breakfast for Physical AI" in Rincon Hill, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, is described on the page as being for the people building the physical economy: construction, real estate, data centers, energy, and robotics.

At the same hour, Goodwin hosts "SF Tech Week Tennis" at the Lisa & Douglas Goldman Tennis Center, 50 Bowling Green Drive, in Golden Gate Park. The page names Goodwin tech partners Andrew Sparks and Brian McPeake as hosts and lists real estate and proptech among the firm's areas of experience.

It is a good reminder that real estate is part of the technology conversation, not apart from it.

Morning surf, runs, and coffee

Friday's mornings are some of the best of the week. The 6 at 6 run with verso.run sets out at 6:00 AM from the Y Combinator office at 580 20th Street, heading to the Ferry Building and back with a sunrise at the Bay Bridge per the page. Forgepoint Capital and Ashurst Perkins Coie host a surf meetup in the Outer Richmond at 7:30 AM for experienced surfers, with breakfast on the beach around 9:00 AM for anyone surf-curious. At 10:00 AM, "Running on AI" starts at Cupid's Span, 289 Steuart Lane, and runs along the Embarcadero toward Fort Mason, finishing with coffee at Equator Coffees.

At 8:30 AM, Somarae hosts "COFFEE + CONNECT" at Mindspace Market Street, 575 Market Street, with a fireside featuring Dave Garland of Second Century Ventures and co-hosts including Asya Bradley of Stripe.

Surf in the morning, a run along the water, coffee before the first meeting: that is the lifestyle many founders are trying to protect when they choose where to live.

Demos, a birthday, and the afterparty

Choose the place you want to come back to

Tech Week is designed to be intense. What I hope you take home is clarity about the everyday life you want once it is over: a city base for weeks like this one, a primary home with space and quiet in Morgan Hill or elsewhere in the South Bay, or both. Trevor and I help founders sort that out calmly, on their timeline.

If the week has you thinking about where to put down roots in the Bay, email us. Prefer email. We will answer directly, and we are happy to plan a South Bay visit around your schedule.
